Deadline: Wharton-Amazon Writing Competition

September 28, 2017

Thursday, September 28 | 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM EDT

Given that Wharton, Amazon, and Philadelphia all pride themselves on their strong writing cultures, a business-themed writing competition allows Wharton students to advocate for Philadelphia—the city that wrote the nation into being—in a way that highlights this shared commitment to the written word.

Amazon recently made news with its announcement that it intends to build a second, North American, corporate headquarters (HQ2 to Amazon’s HQ1 located in Seattle). The $5 billion HQ2 will rival that of Seattle’s HQ1 in size, bringing 50,000 high-paying jobs and tens of billions of dollars in investment to the winning city. Amazon structured this internal decision-making process as an external competition, inviting cities across North America to submit proposals on why they should be selected as the future home of HQ2.

Mayor Kenney and the team putting together Philadelphia’s proposal want to hear from you on what makes Philadelphia a great fit for Amazon.

Competition Details

There will be one competition for Wharton undergraduates and one competition for MBAs:

  • Finalists will be selected by a distinguished panel of journalists, and will have their memos reviewed by the proposal team at Philadelphia’s Department of Commerce (meaning your ideas could be included in the official proposal that Philadelphia submits to Amazon).
  • Winners will be selected by Philadelphia’s proposal team, and will be:
    • Invited to City Hall to meet senior city officials.
    • Invited to lunch with me.
    • Featured on Wharton’s website and in any media articles that result from the competition.
