Eligibility, Requirements, and Application
Penn undergraduates interested in transferring to Wharton should review the information below and in the FAQ and also meet with their home school advising office as soon as possible to discuss their plans.
Wharton academic advisors and other staff are not available to meet with prospective students or provide feedback on applications, and any questions should be directed to undergradinfo@wharton.upenn.edu.
Eligibility
Below are general eligibility requirements for current Penn students seeking to internally transfer into the Wharton School:
- Penn students who are at the end of their first year (after two semesters) or in the middle of the sophomore year (after the third semester) at Penn are eligible to apply.
- Students who transferred to Penn from another college or university (external transfers) are not eligible to apply for internal transfer.
- Students who previously internally transferred to any of Penn’s undergraduate schools or divisions are not eligible to transfer again within the University.
- Students in Penn’s College of Liberal and Professional Studies are not eligible to apply for internal transfer.
Students must also meet specific academic and course requirements, which are listed below.
Academic Requirements
In addition to the eligibility requirements, there are specific academic requirements and course prerequisites that all students wishing to internally transfer into Wharton must meet:
- Students applying for internal transfer must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30.
- Applicants must complete at least four (4) course units (CU) per semester at Penn (fall and spring semesters only).
- Students can take required courses over the summer as long as those courses are completed prior to applying for entry into Wharton.
- Classes taken at Penn during summer terms do not count towards the four-CU requirement.
- Only one course can be taken pass/fail during an academic year. Required courses cannot be taken pass/fail.
- Students must earn a “C” (2.0) or better in required courses to be eligible to apply. Students cannot retake required courses.
- All open grading issues (Incompletes, NRs, or GRs) should be resolved within two weeks after the official end of the term.
- External exam (e.g., AP, IB) scores (that count as waivers) or credits and transfer credits must appear on the student’s record before the application is submitted.
Course Prerequisites
May Rising-Sophomore Applicants (August Entry)
The following three (3) prerequisite courses must be completed by the end of the spring semester.
- MATH 1400 or MATH 1070 ¹
- ECON 0100 ¹
- ECON 0200 ¹
¹ AP/IB scores, credits, or waivers may be used to fulfill these prerequisites.
December Sophomore Applicants (January Entry)
Five (5) required courses must be completed by the end of the fall semester (rising second-semester sophomore):
- MATH 1400 or MATH 1070 ¹
- ECON 0100 ¹
- ECON 0200 ¹
And two (2) from the following four options:
- ACCT 1010
- BEPP 2500 or ECON 2100
- STAT 1010² or STAT 1020 ³
- LGST 1000, LGST 1010, MGMT 1010, or MKTG 1010
¹ AP/IB credits and scores/waivers may be used to fulfill the MATH 1400, ECON 0100, and ECON 0200 prerequisites. Also note that external transfer students seeking a dual degree who have received transfer credit for ECON 0110, fulfill the ECON 0100 and 0200 prerequisite.
² Please note the following:
- ESE 3010 or STAT 4300 fulfill this requirement (SEAS students cannot take STAT 1010).
- Students who have received an AP Statistics score of 5 fulfill the STAT 1010 requirement.
- Students who have taken STAT 1110 fulfill the STAT 1010 requirement for admission, but they must take STAT 1020 and at least 0.5 CU of additional upper-level statistics of their choosing to fulfill the Business Fundamentals requirement for statistics.
3 Please note the following:
- Students who have fulfilled the STAT 1010 requirement may take STAT 1020 (or ESE 4020 or STAT 4310).
- ESE 4020 or STAT 4310 fulfill this requirement (SEAS students cannot take STAT 1020).
Other Considerations
Please understand that the application process is very selective. Simply having the minimum GPA and meeting the other eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission. It important to note that the Admissions Committee will also consider the quality of the answers to the application questions as well as the extent to which the applicant has explored and challenged themselves academically.
